Truck Relief Route

US 281 Hamilton Truck / Relief Route Project

The US 281 Hamilton Truck / Relief Route is a Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) project intended to improve regional mobility, enhance safety, reduce through-truck traffic in downtown Hamilton, and support long-term transportation and economic development opportunities for the community.

Project Status

The project is active and is being advanced by TxDOT. A proposed alignment has been identified, and the project is currently moving through environmental review, schematic design, and continued project development.

The project is not currently under construction.

Why This Project Matters

US 281 is a major north-south corridor used by local travelers, freight traffic, agricultural operations, oilfield traffic, visitors, and regional through-traffic. The proposed relief route is intended to help move truck and through-traffic more safely and efficiently while reducing congestion and pressure on Hamilton’s downtown square.

For Hamilton, the project represents a long-term opportunity to support:

  • Safer traffic movement
  • Improved freight mobility
  • Downtown revitalization
  • Future growth and investment
  • Stronger regional connectivity
  • Better separation of local traffic and through-traffic

Proposed Project

TxDOT’s current project materials describe the proposed project as a new-location roadway in Hamilton County involving US 281 and SH 36. The project is approximately 16.7 miles in length.

Because this project is still in development, details may continue to evolve as TxDOT completes environmental review, engineering, right-of-way planning, and other required steps.

Property and Right-of-Way Information

The City of Hamilton and Hamilton Economic Development Corporation do not determine final roadway alignment or right-of-way acquisition. TxDOT is the lead agency for the project.

Property owners, prospective buyers, and real estate professionals should review the most current TxDOT maps and project materials before making land purchase or development decisions near the proposed corridor.

A proposed alignment has been identified, but property-specific questions regarding potential right-of-way impacts should be directed to TxDOT.

Public Involvement

TxDOT has hosted public meetings and provided project materials for public review. As the project continues, public input and project updates will occur through the TxDOT process.
